Film Review: I Love You, Man (2009)

I Love You, Man is a Judd Apatow comedy without Judd Apatow. It contains his style of humor, which obviously travels with the actors he uses. It has Apatow regulars Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, and the lesser-known Joe Lo Truglio and fits into the slightly-romantic comedy genre alongside Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Film Review: The Last House on the Left (2009)
If one wasn't aware that The Last House on the Left was a remake of a 1972 film, one might assume that it's just another entry into the "horror porn" genre. While it does contain the same gruesome elements as films like Saw, it's much more of a commentary on them rather than an exploitation. And with franchises like Saw and Hostel becoming so popular as of late, this remake is incredibly relevant. Unfortunately, it isn't nearly as fleshed out as it could be.
Peggle Now Available on Xbox Live Arcade
Peggle, PopCap Games' plinko-like casual game, is now available on Xbox Live for a paltry ten bucks. Buy it. Buy it now. How can you resist a game with an adorable chipmunk named Jimmy Lightning who rides a skateboard? On second thought, he might be a beaver. It doesn't even matter. What matters is that Peggle is one of the most fun, addictive games you will ever play. The writing is hilarious; even the Xbox Live achievements had me laughing. The game blasts Beethoven's Ode to Joy when you complete a level. What more could you want? This is the game that you'll start up when you're not sure what you want to play. You'll always be in the mood to play Peggle. Even Yahtzee had trouble putting it down.
TV Review: Castle
ABC's new series Castle premiered last night. It stars Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame as the titular character Rick Castle, an author who becomes involved in a murder investigation when someone starts recreating the grizzly murders in his novels. Stana Katic, who's done plenty of television guest spots but nothing real notable, plays Kate Beckett, the tough-as-nails lead detective desperate for a love life but not desperate enough to fall prey to Castle's constant advances, even though she's somewhat smitten with him.
Sound familiar? It should. Castle is just a mish mash of pre-existing formulas. Charming oddball that helps solve cases? Check. Straight-laced cop that reluctantly tolerates oddball's nonsense? Check. Female character with no love life despite being ridiculously attractive? Check. Even the story arcs are riddled with clichés. Character who won't drop a supposedly closed case because it "doesn't feel right?" Check!
